Pleasantville Defense Shuts Down Edgemont Football

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. -- Edgemont football's offense was averaging 38 points a game while Pleasantville’s defense had allowed just six points in its last three games. Something had to give Saturday in a Section 1 Class B football game.

When the game concluded, it was Pleasantville’s defense that had the final say as the Panthers defeated Edgemont, 25-12.

Pleasantville improved to 4-1 and will play Our Lady of Lourdes in week six. Pleasantville further improved its chances for a post-season berth with this win. Edgemont’s only offensive touchdown came on an 18-yard drive after recovering a Pleasantville fumble in the first quarter.

The Panthers intercepted Edgemont quarterback Jackson Stone three times, including two by Greg Drillock. He returned one 29 yards for a touchdown, giving Pleasantville a 25-6 lead early in the fourth quarter.

“Our main focus on defense was to stop their big plays,” captain and defensive end Cameron Burns. “Our ability to stop the run forced them to throw the ball and when you throw the ball, you can make mistakes. You saw this with the interceptions.”

Edgemont rushed for a paltry 61 yards. The Pleasantville defense forced Stone to the air 19 times. He completed six for 96 yards.

“We focused on not getting too far up the field,” Burns said. “We were reading the play first and forced them to make the change. This enabled us to make the hits and tackles at the line of scrimmage.

“Our defensive coordinator always preaches to us 11 hats to the ball and everyone plays hard until the whistle blows.”

Pleasantville’s offense, which scored two touchdowns in the past two games, received two from wide receiver Charlie Montgomery. The other was a 57-yard rumble by Nick Greto, thrusting the Panthers to a 7-6 lead in the second quarter.
