Montgomery's Two Touchdowns Fuel Pleasantville Football

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. -- Charlie Montgomery and some of his teammates felt it was time to become more of a major contributor to Pleasantville’s offense Saturday.

The senior wide receiver would make the biggest impact, catching two touchdown passes in Pleasantville’s 25-12 win over Edgemont in a Section 1 Class B football game.

Both of Montgomery’s scoring receptions came on fourth down.

Montgomery said the offense needed to step it up. Though Pleasantville had won two consecutive games, the offense had produced just two touchdowns. Pleasantville surpassed this with three against Edgemont.

Nick Greto responded with a 57-yard touchdown run in the first half, then Pleasantville took over in the second half, thanks to the offensive line.

“We were using our running game to set up the pass,” said the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Montgomery. “In the second half we really picked it up and that opened things up for us and we came through.”

Montgomery made two excellent catches on balls thrown from quarterback Anthony Godino. Montgomery hauled in a 10-yard strike, on fourth down-and-goal, four minutes into the third quarter, hiking Pleasantville’s lead to 13-6.

“I saw I had single coverage and the safety was shaded to the middle,” Montgomery said. “I planted and went outside. It was a very good throw by Anthony.”

Montgomery’s second touchdown catch, as the Panthers were facing fourth-and-15 from the Edgemont 19-yard line, was a study in concentration. Two plays earlier, Montgomery’s 8-yard touchdown catch was negated because of a penalty.

When Godino released the ball, Montgomery turned and had his back to the goalpost. The Edgemont defensive back grabbed the pass while taking a step back and kept his feet in bounds.

“I bobbled it, at first, but I was concentrating on the ball more than anything,” said Montgomery, who was receiving congratulations from his peers. “Our defense has been helping us out all season. We felt good that we did the job offensively in the second half.”
