Pleasantville Schools Set Goals For 2012-13

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - A new year with new members means new goals for the Pleasantville Union Free School District Board of Education.

Board Vice President Shane McGaffey said the 2012-13 goals, which were recently approved, are "overarching" and are used to guide the board during meetings. Sections covered in the process include goals for learning, staff development, curriculum, fiscal, facilities, community and students.

"It provides for a framework for everything we do for the entire year," McGaffey said. "A lot of people are thinking all budget, all the time, but this frames everything."

A focus for the board in 2012-13 will be creating more hands-on ways for students to use what they learn in class, including expanding the high school's internship program. Currently, the program is for seniors in their final semester, but it may be expanded to include more grades and to run throughout the school year.

The board will also look at finding new sources of revenue, maintaining transparency during the budget process, long-term budget planning, better communication through email and social media and creating a reserve fund for capital projects.

"I think there a lot of really good goals in there," McGaffey said. "Thinking about how we can make things better and give our kids a better education is always a good thing."

In her recent meetings with officials from other school districts, Superintendent Mary Fox-Alter said she was surprised learn how unique the goals process is to the Pleasantville school board.

"I was surprised at how many school districts actually don’t adopt board goals, and yet they’re embedded into a model that you need to evaluate for your administrators," Fox-Alter said. "It involves granular information, and it helps set up the stages for action steps all the way down the department levels."
