The Pleasantville Board of Education unanimously accepted the resignation of Bartz during a heavily-attended meeting on Tuesday. Bartz will step down on July 31.

School Board President Lois Winkler noted before the board's vote that they had “painstakingly deliberated about this decision.”

The school district did not disclose details on what led to Bartz's resignation. Parents and supporters spoke at length during Tuesday's meeting in support of Bartz. Bartz herself thanked the district and community before noting her role as a “change agent” may have made people anxious.

“I might have moved ahead too quickly for some, and I think that's really what I'm guilty of,” she said during the meeting.

The board's resolution to approve Bartz's resignation can be viewed online.

The Pleasantville school board issued a statement Wednesday evening: "What the Board of Education acted on last night was a consensual agreement that was vetted by the attorneys and approved by the representatives of the administrators’ union. It was signed weeks ago (May 23) and called for us to hold it in escrow until last night’s Board of Education meeting. The Board of Education lived up to the terms of the agreement."

Bartz joined the district in 2011, moving from New Canaan, Conn.

Bartz told officials she believed in second chances and said she could do things better if she remained in her position. But, she told parents, she has no plans to sue the district. Bartz added there's no financial gain to be had from resigning.

“However it goes, I have absolutely no animosity to anybody here,” she said.
