Meet Pleasantville School Board Candidate: Emily Rubin Persons

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - Three candidates are running for two openings on the Pleasantville Union Free School District Board of Education in Tuesday's election.

Among them is Emily Rubin Persons, a 15-year resident of Pleasantville who currently has one son in each of the district's three schools.

Persons, who works as an importer and wholesaler of retail items, said she decided to run for the board of education because she believes her communication skills can be valuable in opening up dialogue between parents, teachers and administrators.

"I'm a communicator, I talk to people on both sides. I get people to talk, and those voices need to be brought together," Persons said. "I think that's something that I can bring to the table."

Persons was a member of the board of education’s Budget Field Trip Committee in 2011 and a member of the Budget PAC committee for Bedford Road School in 2012. She also spends time volunteering for PTA events and activities.

While she hopes to strengthen communication between Pleasantville community members, she said she also thinks school boards throughout the county need to work together in battling issues such as unfunded mandates.

"It's communicating within the community, but what's also clearly very important is communicating with other communities because of all these issues with the state," Person said. "There needs to be some fresh ideas brought to the board and brought to the district."
