During the day in the sun, students spent most of their school day outside, enjoying activities like hikes on the Peabody trails, interactive African drumming, physical education activities and artistic creations.
Along with the activities, the students also took part in a No One Eats Alone lunch, where all students ate together and got a chance to have lunch with different people.
Usually the middle schoolers have lunch with people in their grade, but No One Eats Alone, a national student-led lunchtime initiative created by the Beyond Differences organization, encourages students to meet new people and make sure everyone is involved.
“I liked it,” eighth grader Lucy Rogers said. “It was a good feeling to eat with someone different like the seventh graders.”
Usually, the middle schoolers do not get to have a field day, so for them, it was a great experience.
“It’s nice to be out in nature instead of inside,” said eighth grader Maya Kharem.
The day was made possible by coordinator and seventh grade English teacher Jennica Vieira and Sleepy Hollow Middle School staff, parent volunteers and donors.
Middle school art teacher Andrea Harrison also has been decorating donated “Buddy Benches” for students. The benches, donated by parents, will be placed in the middle school courtyard to encourage students to make new friends. Students have suggested messages that will decorate the benches.
The middle school hopes to keep the No One Eats Alone initiative alive at the school by kicking-off the school year in 2016-17 with a similar event.
