In the wake of the latest school shooting in Florida, and a recent shooting incident in northern Westchester, some high school students in the Hudson Valley are organizing a walkout as part of a national campaign to raise gun control awareness.

Students at Carmel High School are planning to join others throughout the country at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 14 as part of the National School Walkout, which is “to protest Congress’ inaction to do more than tweet thoughts and prayers in response to the gun violence plaguing our schools and neighborhoods.”

“We need action. Students and allies are organizing the national school walkout to demand Congress pass legislation to keep us safe from gun violence at our schools, on our streets and in our homes and places of worship,” according to organizers of the national movement.

“Students and staff have the right to teach and learn in an environment free from the worry of being gunned down in their classrooms or on their way home from school. Parents have the right to send their kids to school in the mornings and see them home alive at the end of the day.”

In Carmel, dozens of students have vowed to participate in the walkout, "because it is time for change." They join students in Brewster, who have also announced their intention to participate in the walkout.

"We are coming together to walk out of our school with signs in solidarity," Carmel High School senior Anne Pozner and Taylor Smith, who organized the walkout, said in an email. "The reason for this walkout is to make it known to Congress that we will no longer lay quiet as they sit and ignore the obvious need for gun law reform in our nation.

"We are participating in this national event because it is time for change. The walkout is a call to action to our government officials in Congress to do something before another tragedy occurs."
