Officers were called to a home on Mill Plain Road in Fairfield on Thursday morning by the victim. She told police that her phone had rung at home but she did not answer it after the caller ID showed it her ex-boyfriend, 45-year-old Sunil Mehta, was calling, police said.

A short time later, she told police that she heard a noise in her garage. When she went to investigate, Mehta was inside her garage, police said.

He attacked her, pushing her up against the garage wall and into a shoe rack, she told police. He then repeatedly punched her in the face and attempted to gouge her eyes, police said.

During the fight, she attempted to raise her hands to protect her face, police said. She was unsuccessful but reached and hit the garage door opener, she told police.

When the garage door opened, Mehta fled, she told police.

Officers located Mehta in his parked car on Kings Highway East after canvasing the area, police said.

While in custody, Mehta used his phone call to call the victim and ask whether she was OK, police said. Officers had warned him not to have any contact with her, police said.

Mehta was charged with disorderly conduct, third-degree assault, second-degree criminal trespassing and second-degree harassment. He was held on $5,000 bond and taken to court Friday, Aug. 1.
