"With everyone without power, posting notices and information on our website was almost pointless because no one could access it," Dwyer said. "So we actually started posting a flier on the Village Hall door. People actually came everyday to check it out. But it's time to get with the year 2013."
With that, the village is set to unveil a new notification system that can send email and text alerts to residents' cellphones in an emergency. The village spoke with surrounding towns and village to discuss how to best relay information to residents during emergencies, Dwyer said. The village decided on the alert system offered through the company Code Red Notification Systems, which she said can be useful in a number of ways.
"The village board liked it because it's very versatile in the types of message we can send out," Dwyer said.
Residents who are subscribed to the system can receive messages regarding road closures, downed trees or power lines as well as water main breaks among many other scenarios.
The village is gathering information from residents for the system, Dwyer said. The village website will soon offer a way to subscribe for the alerts. The system could be up and running within the next few weeks, she said.
