PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. -- A Pleasantville High School senior has been honored for his research on neurological diseases.

Aaron Huang recently received the Acorda Scientific Excellence Award for his research paper and scientific work.

Huang researched cells that could deliver therapeutic treatments to the brain. The discovery of these cells, called penetrating peptides, could lead to the curing of many neurological diseases. The cells help by crossing the membrane of brain endothelial cells to allow for the treatment.

"The research is important because it brings a potential solution to the various neurological diseases," Huang said. "This research may give scientists a greater understanding of the penetration mechanisms of cell-penetrating peptides and the possibility of discovering new cell-penetrating peptides."

Huang designed his research project and did the gathering and evaluating of data himself, with insight from a mentor.

"I want to be a medical researcher because I would be at the forefront of medical discoveries and have the possibility of making contributions to the science and medical communities," Huang said.

While at Pleasantville, Huang has been honored for academic achievements in both science and math.
