PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - For years, as the leaves fall off the trees and the temperature drops, the Pleasantville Farmers' Market packs up for the winter months until its spring time again.

For the first time ever, the market will remain open year round with its new winter home in the Pleasantville Middle School.

"Customers have been asking for an indoor farmers' market for years," said Peter Rogovin, chairperson of Foodchester, the nonprofit organization that operates the market.

The indoor market will have its grand opening Saturday. The market will continue to be open every Saturday at the middle school from Saturday through May 11 before it will move back to its traditional outdoor location at Memorial Plaza starting May 25.

Rogovin said the middle school poses as an ideal location to keep the market open for multiple reasons.

"Pleasantville Middle School provides the perfect setting to bring fresh, locally grown food to the village because its a community hub with enough parking to accommodate vendors, customers and people attending school functions or sports games," he said

The market moving indoors also will allow new vendors to sell fresh products that normally are not offered at the outdoor market, such as chicken parts, yogurt and honey.

Steven Bates, executive director of the farmers' market's operations, said moving the market indoors could boost other areas of the village as well.

"We hope this market encourages folks to see Pleasantville as a great day trip destination," Bates said. "Whether they stay to shop, eat, or take in a movie at the Jacob Burns."

For its grand opening Saturday, the market will host a complimentary celebration from 9-10 a.m. with coffee. The market will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Parking will be available at both middle school parking lots, as well as the parking lot at Pleasantville High School and on nearby streets where parking laws are not in affect.
