The Crusaders (12-0) beat archrival Iona Prep, 16-14, on Saturday at Fordham University. Stepinac will play for the inaugural Catholic League state championship on Sunday, Dec. 7, in Uniondale, N.Y. Stepinac shared the CHSFL title in 1955.

In the win over Iona Prep, Stepinac jumped out to a quick 16-0 lead and held on as Prep mounted a late rally. The victory was not secured until T.J. Morrison’s interception on the game’s final play. Stepinac forced three interceptions, including two by Damarcus Miller. Miller returned one interception for a touchdown.

Malcolm Major ran 29 yards for a Stepinac touchdown, and the Crusaders’ other points came on a safety. Robert Madison threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Brian Thompson and a 43-yard touchdown to Dylan Mucci for Prep.

Stepinac is ranked No. 2 in New York in the latest MaxPrep’s rankings, behind Canisius of Buffalo. Iona Prep (9-3) is ranked 11th. Prep, which its six-game winning streak snapped, lost to Stepinac twice this season. Its only other loss was a 32-25 setback to St. Frances of Academy of Maryland in September.

Stepinac will meet the winner of the survivor of the Monsignor Martin Association. Canisius is one of four teams still alive in that tournament, which has been delayed by the record snow fall last week in Buffalo.
