Pleasantville Girls Tennis Gets Things Started

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Despite a loss to Hastings Monday, the Pleasantville girls tennis team played well in all seven matches and is looking forward to improving through the season.

“We have some good players, so we want to get better playing doubles and as a team,” Panthers captain Jackie Marra said. “When we play in our league we should do pretty well. It’s important to be able to make good returns. You have an advantage when you’re serving.”

Freshman Amanda Posa seemed calm after winning her first varsity match for the Panthers over Hastings’ Nina Holl. “The Hastings player was very good, so I think I played well,” Posa said. “I served well which helps when you don’t know your opponent.”

First doubles teammates Courtney Sheehy and Nancy DeMastro lost their match to Hastings’ doubles partners Victoria Yan and Katerina Barry, but played well in their first outing together.

“We struggled in the first set, and then we won the second, so we gained some confidence,” DelMastro said. “I think Courtney and I play well together. We have to communicate and learn when to hit winners. We are already getting better.”

Sheehy, a freshman, was pleased with the team’s first real match.

“It takes time to learn what we can do together and this is our first match,” Sheehy said. “I felt more comfortable in the second set and the third. We’re all still learning about what to do on the court. We’re going to get better and better.”

Pleasantville next plays Valhalla at home Wednesday at 4:15 p.m.
