MAHOPAC, N.Y. - The Pleasantville Panthers defense stood tall for three quarters Sunday until top-seeded Our Lady of Lourdes drove the ball for the winning touchdown with less than four minutes to play in a 14-9 victory against the Panthers at Mahopac High School.
The underdog Panthers (6-3), who scored all of their points in the first half to take a 9-0 lead, could not keep unbeaten Lourdes (9-0) at bay in the second half, allowing 14 points in the final two quarters.
Panthers quarterback Anthony Godino hit receiver Charlie Montgomery for a 25-yard touchdown pass in the first half for a 6-0 lead and Pleasantville got a field goal to make the score 9-0 at halftime.
Lourdes running back Bryce Gioia, who was the game's Most Valuable Offensive Player, ran the ball 40 times for 201 yards, mostly in the third and fourth quarter. Gioia scored both touchdowns, the winning score with 3:43 remaining in the game.
