Pleasantville Boys Soccer Retools During Time Off

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Pleasantville High School boys soccer team suffered a devastating 2-1 loss to Rye Neck on Tuesday when Orlando Gonzalez scored a game-winning goal with just 15 seconds remaining.

But now, the Panthers (1-2-1) get almost two weeks off until their next game at Fox Lane on Friday, Sept. 21. Fourth-year coach Fernando Zappone said the time off will serve the team well after its rough start in the season.

“We need to make sure we put games away when we have the opportunities, that we do score,” Zappone said. “Make sure to tighten things up on defense, and that’s it.”

The Panthers lost Tuesday’s game when Gonzalez beat the defense and fired one past the goalie to lift Rye Neck to a 2-1 lead with only seconds remaining. Zappone said a momentary lack of focus affected the team.

“Just lost concentration for a split second and it cost us the game,” Zappone said. “We had chances to put it away and we didn’t, and paid a very hefty price for that.”

Pleasantville finished 5-10 last season and received one of the worst seeds in the section. The extended time off can only help the Panthers avoid going down that same path again in 2012.
