PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – After Keon Williams reached the 1,000-point plateau in his Pace University basketball career, he briefly welcomed the recognition but then went right back to work.

The 6-foot-6 forward finished with a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds in the Setters’ 75-63 victory over the University of Massachusetts-Lowell.

Williams, from Hackensack, N.J., converted a layup in the first half to reach the magic number. But a consummate team player, Williams downplayed the milestone.

“The 1,000 points is a result of the coach (Jim) Harter calling 500 plays,” said Williams, who has his degree in business management. “This is a team award. I look at it as we scored 1,000 points.

“It was great to do it in front of the student body here at Pace, but more importantly, it was a win against a great team in our conference. It showed our resiliency as a team and our character that we were able to bounce back with an excellent effort.”

Williams said he and his teammates had not played well in their previous game, a decisive loss to St. Anselm.

After the game in which he hit 1,000 points, Williams immediately contacted his mother.

“It was a gift to my mom,” said Williams, who is studying for a master’s degree in public administration. “All those years, when I was a kid, my mom would take me to the gym. I owe this all to her.”
