PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Pace’s softball team, which earned the No. 10 ranking in the first NCAA East Region Poll of the season, split a doubleheader Friday against ninth-ranked Dominican College.
Dominican took game one, 5-0, but Pace rebounded in game two for a 6-5 victory. The Setters are now 22-14 overall.
The Chargers held Pace to just four hits in the first game, two of which came off the bat of Nicole Schultheis. Kayla Hill (5-2) threw 3 1/3 innings for Pace in the first game and allowed five runs on six hits. Colby Hochmuth came on in relief and threw 2 2/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit ball.
In game two, Natalie Gellos smacked an RBI double in the top of the first inning to give the Setters a 1-0 lead. Dominican answered with a run in the bottom of the frame and added another in the third to take a 2-1 lead.
Gellos singled in the fourth inning and scored when Hana Wright roped a double to tie the game. The Setters scored three times in the fifth inning to retake the lead. Wright and Lauren Bell each drove in a run in the fifth.
The Chargers refused to go away quietly and tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and one more in the sixth. Dominican committed an error in the top of the seventh to give Pace a baserunner, and Lana Buchbinder drove in the winning run.
Caitlin McCann (8-4) gave up five runs on 11 hits and struck out two batters in six innings. Chelsea Shea pitched the seventh and gave up just one hit while striking out one.
Pace hosts fellow Northeast-10 Conference member Saint Michael’s College for a doubleheader starting at noon Saturday.
