PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. -- Pace University men's lacrosse team earned a 12-9 victory versus the Mercy Mavericks in the ECAC championship Saturday.
Sophomore Peter Sharp and freshman Anthony Gadaleta each tallied three goals to help the Setters earn the win.
After Mercy jumped out to a 1-0 lead, the Setters rallied with three goals to end the first quarter. Gadaleta scored his 19th goal of his rookie season on an assist by freshman Wyatt Barfoot before freshman Christopher Brown scored a pair of goals late in the quarter, with Ryan O'Hagan and Liam Brennanpicking up assists. After the first quarter, the Setters led 3-1.
Midway through the second period, Sharp beat the goalkeeper for his 17th tally of the season. One minute later, Freshman John Oteri found the back of the net to give Pace a 5-1 lead. After Mercy added a late goal, the Setters led 5-2 at the break. After a six-goal output in the third, Pace was leading 11-5.
The Setters allowed two late goals, but hung on to win the championship.
Senior Michael Bonitatibus was named most outstanding player after a dominant performance between the pipes for the Setters.
Bonitatibus played all 60 minutes in net, allowing nine goals while tying a season high with 18 saves. He faced 44 shots and registered a .667 percent save percentage to help him earn MVP honors.
