The junior wide receiver, who caught only one pass in the first seven games, quadrupled that Friday night and was a major factor in Pleasantville’s 16-14 win over Nanuet in a semifinal of the Section 1 Class B Football Championships.
Drillock led Pleasantville with four catches for 100 yards, including a 43-yard reception on the Panthers’ first possession of the game. His 24-yard grab helped set up a 21-yard scoring strike from quarterback Anthony Godino to Owen Reda. Drillock’s 16-yard catch also set up Godino’s touchdown strike to James Leyden.
“In our first game with Nanuet the post was open so I felt I could get over the top against man coverage,” Drillock said. “When I saw the ball in the air, I was able to catch it and when I came down, make sure I had possession. That was my first big catch of the year.”
Godino and the Pleasantville coaching staff noticed Nanuet was double-covering Charlie Montgomery, so they turned to Drillock.
“Greg was my number one receiver on JV last year,” Godino said. “He does everything really good. When we put Charlie in the slot, we put Greg at No. 1 and he stepped up big time.”
Drillock had all of his yardage in the first half as Godino completed 12 of 15 passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns. Once Drillock established himself, Pleasantville coach Tony Becerra kept calling on No. 84.
“I was very happy that the coaches had a lot of confidence in me,” Drillock said. “I’ve been working hard in practice and I am happy that I got a chance in this game.”
Drillock said Pleasantville’s offensive approach may have confused Nanuet, thus allowing the receivers to find openings.
“I don’t think Nanuet saw what we were doing because they were playing to stop our running game,” Drillock said.
