WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - A fbasketball standout who grew up in Westchester and starred for Rick Pitino at Louisville last year may be a lottery selection in Thursday night’s NBA Draft, possibly as a target for the New York Knicks.

Donovan Mitchell Jr., who was born in Greenwich, Conn., and grew up in Elmsford, has been a popular name for teams picking in the first half of the first round of the draft, with some experts saying he may be an option for his hometown Knicks, who have the eighth selection on Thursday.

The NBA Draft starts at 7 p.m. from the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn. It will air on ESPN.

The son of a New York Mets official, Mitchell averaged more than 14 points and five rebounds for Brewster Academy, a prep school in New Hampshire. As a breakout sophomore at Louisville, he averaged nearly 16 points per game on 40 percent shooting from the field. According to Sports-Reference, he averaged more than 19 points on average per 40 minutes.

An all-ACC first-team choice, Mitchell led the league in steals while starring for the Cardinals.

Draft experts have the 6-foot 3-inch Mitchell being a possible lottery pick, landing anywhere from 8 to the Knicks to pick 14, where the guard would join the rotation in Miami. Many pundits also have slotted him at 11, going to the Charlotte Hornets.
