PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Pleasantville High School girls basketball star AnnMarie DiCarlo is The Pleasantville Daily Voice Athlete of the Month for January.

The sophomore has helped lead her team to a 13-1 record this season, with the lone loss against Maia Hood and Alexander Hamilton.

DiCarlo posted 24 points, including six three-pointers, in a win against Fox Lane on Jan. 14. She added nine points against Westlake on Jan. 10 and 16 against Croton on Jan. 9. She also led the team with 13 points in a rout of Port Chester on Jan. 7.

DiCarlo has had an excellent season, but when asked why, she immediately shifted the focus to her teammates.

“Our team has great chemistry and we work the ball well,” DiCarlo said. “Having great teamwork, and definitely communication, is key.”

Pleasantville has enjoyed a successful season, but DiCarlo, a two-year varsity starter, hopes that the future is even brighter for the Panthers.

“I think we have a great future. We work hard every day at practice. We always have fun, but we always settle down, work hard,” DiCarlo said. “I couldn’t ask for better seniors. Everyone on the bench is so loud.”

Pleasantville coach Myndi Hill has worked with DiCarlo in each of her varsity seasons and has noticed a marked improvement from last season to this one.

“Even the difference between freshman and sophomore, how much she has grown into the leading scoring role,” Hill said. “It’s important that she continues to mature on the court, her physical game and her mental game.”

DiCarlo is not just the team’s leading scorer; she has also become a defensive stopper for the Panthers, which has impressed Hill.

“I think that’s where her game truly has just flourished,” Hill said. “That’s what you love as a coach about a player like that. She’s just a pleasure to coach.”

DiCarlo has been playing basketball since age 5. She played in junior varsity as an eighth-grader before starting at the varsity level. She also played AAU basketball.

And she doesn’t plan to slow down anytime soon.

“I just want to get better as a player, improve my game,” DiCarlo said. “One day I hope to play in college, but I’ve just got to take one game at a time, one year at a time.”
