Sleepy Hollow Rose Ceremony Bids Farewell To Class Of 2016

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. -- The 25th annual Rose Ceremony, one of Sleepy Hollow’s most sentimental events of the year, recently took place in the Kusel Auditorium at Sleepy Hollow High School.

First-grade students from the Winfield Morse School handed out roses to the graduating seniors of Sleepy Hollow High School during a special ceremony.

The class of 2027 first-graders at the Winfield Morse School, handed roses to the class of 2016, the outgoing seniors. The event complemented the fall ceremony that took place earlier this year, when the Class of 2016 welcomed the younger students by giving them a rose.

In an opening address to a packed crowd of parents, teachers and students, Principal Carol Conklin-Spillane warmly welcomed the class of 2027 and offered her appreciation to the outgoing class of 2016.

“The Class of 2016 is a wonderful, warm, special group of young people that really embrace the values we care about in the community,” she said. “And so today above all else is an opportunity for this community to keep passing the torch of the values that matter here.”

Seniors Heather Colley and Vanessa Onwe presented the video “Wake Up Sleepy,” a comedic and sentimental farewell video they made. It featured interviews with peers and faculty about their feelings about the departure of the senior class.

The Class of 2027 also offered the outgoing seniors a performance of the song “A Day in the Life of Me.”

English teacher and senior class adviser Tom Rogers read the names of the seniors as they each crossed the stage to receive a rose from the first-graders. When the younger students crossed the stage, some were greeted with hugs and high-fives, and others were greeted by a huge embrace from an older sibling who happened to be in the graduating class.

Senior Zoe Kaplan sang the “Star-Spangled Banner” while senior class President Nicole Pereira and senior student body President Elizabeth Silver led the Pledge of Allegiance. Katherine Bender also performed the school’s alma mater.
