PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Pleasantville High School students Colette Mary McCullagh and Jeewan Naik have been named semifinalists in the annual, nationwide Intel Science Talent Search competition.
Both students and their respective research projects that were conducted for the competition were chosen as semifinalists along with about 300 other students out of 1,712 entries from across the country. McCullagh and Naik, both 17, will each receive a $1,000 scholarship for their achievement. Pleasantville High School will receive $2,000 to further their math, science or engineering programs.
McCullagh's research project was titled "Treatment of a Drosophila Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma Model Reveals Two Potential Inhibitors of Cancer Metastasis." Naik's project was titled, "A New Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans Vector Based on pRK2319."
As semifinalists, McCullagh and Naik have the chance to be chosen as part of the group of 40 finalists who will travel to Washington, D.C., to attend the Intel Science Talent Institute in March. There, the finalists will further compete for a chance to win part of $630,000 in awards and the grand prize of $100,000.
The Intel Science Talent Competition is the nation's most prestigious high school science competition. Previous winners hold more than 100 science and math honors including Nobel Prize and National Medal of Science awards.
