Pleasantville Students Inducted Into Honor Society

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Dozens of Pleasantville High School students were inducted into the Foreign Language Honors Society on Thursday night in the school’s auditorium.

“I just wanted to tell all the students here how thrilled I am to be here and that you’re being honored, and how proud I am of all of you,” said Principal Dawn Bartz. “This took a tremendous amont of dedication, hard work, sweat, perhaps some sleepless nights, to be able to reach the top of your language.”

French, Italian, and Spanish language students took to the stage to receive their certificates, light their candles, and swear an oath to continue their studies and master the language for which they were being honored.

“I promise to devote myself to the study of Spanish language in order to master it some day, remembering that language can be a strong tie between persons of different origins or race or religion,” said student Jillian Moroney, reciting the oath of her chapter, Los Mosaicos.

Entrance into the societies included maintaining above a 90 percent average in the language as well as a high overall average. Students taking oaths on Thursday were not just committing to further their own education, but also committing to help others by tutoring and participating in community service.

“The purpose of our society is to give recognition to achievements in Italian, as well as to promote a greater undertsanding and appreciation of Italian culture and civilization,” said Pleasantville High School student Samantha Costanza.
