PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Pleasantville School District has announced an update for the week of April 13-17, in addition to district events that occurred the week of April 6-10.

  • April 14–16: Grades 3–8 NYS English Language Arts (ELA) Assessment
  • Wednesday, April 15: Pleasantville High School NYSSMA Concert at 7:30 p.m. at the Pleasantville High School Auditorium
  • Friday, April 17: Pleasantville Middle School and Pleasantville High School report cards will be available on eSchoolData
  • Friday, April 17: Bedford Road School Grade One Explorations
  • Friday, April 17: Bedford Road School PTA Family Fun Night and Pasta Dinner will be from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Bedford Road School gym and cafeteria.

District happenings for the week of April 6-10:

At the Board of Education meeting:

  • The board received two updates: A proposed 2015-16 budget presentation from Assistant Superintendent for Business David Quattrocchi that reflected revised state aid figures and a capital projects update from architect John D’Angelo.
  • Board announcements: Nominating petitions for two three-year terms (July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2018) on the board of education are available in the district office
  • The board approved donations of $500 from the PHS Class of 2015 and $37,200 for new scoreboards at Parkway/Farrow Field from the PHS Student Organization
  • The board awarded contracts for construction at Bedford Road Schools to Avanti Building Construction Corporation of Mount Vernon; general construction at Pleasantville High School and Middle School to Peter A. Camilli & Sons, Inc. of Pleasantville; roof construction at Pleasantville Middle School to Sea Breeze General Construction, Inc. of Astoria.  

At Bedford Road School:

  • Mrs. Harris’s first-graders wowed their audience with their stellar performance of “Once upon a Lily Pad.” Through song and dance, the students reminded the audience that everyone is unique and special in their own way.
  • The BRS Edible Garden continues to be an active learning place. With guidance from parent volunteers, students are planting and learning about spring crops.

At the Middle School:

  • Sixth-graders conducted interviews with their kindergarten buddies to gather information for the Superhero stories they will write featuring their buddies as the protagonists. The sixth-graders will incorporate all the stages of Freytag’s Pyramid into their stories and put them into hardbound books to be read aloud and presented as gifts to their buddies in June.
  • Howard Cederlund, grandfather of Julian Loring, shared his World War II experiences with studentsin  Mr. Slotoroff’s second period Social Studies class.
  • Inspired by the narrator’s story in “Freak the Mighty,” sixth-graders are composing personal narratives about an important person in their life. As part of the writing process, students will be encouraged to record and listen to their stories on their personal devices and to share their stories with peers and family members.
  • In their Social Sstudies classes, eighth-graders explored the origin of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) during Harry S. Truman’s presidency.
  • In math classes, fifth-graders have been solidifying their understanding of decimal values and operations; sixth-grade students are wrapping up their geometry unit and applying their knowledge to real world situations; seventh-graders are having fun exploring probability and outcomes; and eighth-graders continue to apply abstract algebra concepts in real world contexts.

 At the High School:

  • James McCarthy was selected by the National Association for Music Education to the All Eastern Honors Mixed Chorus. He performed at the All Eastern Biennial Music Festival April 9-12 in Providence, R.I.
  • Students in Ms. Prevost’s Algebra II classes studied trigonometric functions, such as sine, cosine, tangents, secants, etc., as well as radians and unit circles.
  • AP European History students viewed Leap of Faith, a documentary tracing the cultural achievements of European Jews from the Enlightenment to pre-World War II, at the Jacob Burns Film Center.

April 23: Pleasantville High School Foreign Language National Honor Societies Induction Ceremony at 7 p.m. at the Pleasantville High School auditorium.
