Pleasantville Honored For 'Beauty And The Beast' Performance

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - Dozens of actors and actresses from Pleasantville were honored last week for their roles in the high school's March performance of "Beauty and the Beast."

The performance earned the school 14 nominations at the 2012 Metropolitan High School Theater Awards, which were handed out at the Paramount Center for the Arts in Peekskill June 4. While Pleasantville did not take home any hardware that night, County Legislator Michael Smith decided to honor the students in his own way.

On June 19, Smith presented performers, crew, teachers, and anyone else involved in the play with a letter of recogniztion on behalf of the Westchester County Board of Legislators, a certificate of merit, and a golden apple pin.

"Everyone came together and worked together as a team," Smith said. "I assure you 20 years from now when you come back for your reunion with your class, so many of you are going to remember the moments that you had with this play and the fun times you had together, the things you learned and the things you accomplished."

High school principal Dawn Bartz also honored the theater award nominees by handing out certificates. Many individual performers and staff were nominated, but Bartz took most pride in the nomination for Outstanding Overall Performance.

"That means that every single student and every single staff member and every single parent that was involved in this play made it what it was," Bartz said. "And it was a roaring success."

The school put on five performances of the play between March 9-17, which Bartz said all sold out. The previous year's production of "The Wizard of Oz" took home two Metro Awards: Outstanding Direction By Teacher for Kathleen Donovan-Warren and Outstanding Musical Direction for Thomas Hentzelman.
