PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Lienhard School of Nursing in the College of Health Professions at Pace University was selected to receive funding to pilot a “White Coat Ceremony” designed to instill a commitment to provide compassionate care among future health professionals.

The project was made possible with a grant from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation (APGF).

The foundation  has partnered with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) to support the White Coat Ceremonies. This new collaboration between APGF and AACN marks the first time a coordinated effort has been developed to offer similar events at schools of nursing.

In this pilot year, nursing schools in 43 states plus the District of Columbia were provided financial support and guidance to offer White Coat Ceremonies, which consist of the recitation of an oath, cloaking of students in a white coat, an address by an eminent role model and a reception for students and invited guests. Students also receive a specially designed pin that serves as a visual reminder of their oath and commitment to providing high quality care.

The Lienhard ceremony, called the Commitment to Nursing ceremony, took place in February, and all sophomore and accelerated bachelor of science in nursing (ABSN) \\\students on Pace’s Pleasantville campus were called to commit themselves to provide compassionate care -- the nursing profession’s foundation.

"We are delighted to be one of the schools chosen to participate in the White Coat Ceremonies this year," said Martha Greenberg, chair of the Department of Undergraduate Studies at Lienhard School of Nursing. "We are one of only three schools in our state to be selected for this honor. Our students are just starting a journey to become the best nurses they can be, and we know they will continue a life long journey of providing compassionate and excellent care.”

Speakers at the Pace ceremony included College of Health Professions Dean Harriet R. Feldman, PhD, RN, FAAN; Nicole Muccio, a recent Lienhard graduate (class of 2014); and Diane Mancino, executive director of the National Student Nurses’ Association.
