OSSINING, N.Y. – The Ossining School District is getting closer to finding a new superintendent as Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES narrowed the field from 32 candidates across 10 states to five remaining candidates.

Officials are keeping the names and residences of the candidates confidential, but a majority of the candidates reside in New York and New Jersey and at least one candidate is from California, Board of Education President Bill Kress said.

The next step is for the Board of Education to conduct interviews with the five to narrow the field to two or three finalists. The finalists will then have interviews with the district’s search committee.

“The public is never going to meet any of them except for the new superintendent to keep it a confidential process,” Kress said Friday. “That’s because we have to respect the fact that they have jobs, and we want them to be able to go back to them if we don’t hire them.”

Ray Sanchez is set to continue as the district’s interim superintendent until July. A selection could be made before July, but the switch would most likely not occur before July, Kress said.

“They have jobs, and it’s likely whomever we select would stay at their current job until July. But if they want to come on board earlier we might consider doing that,” he said. “The process is moving along really well, and we certainly had a really good pool of candidates.”

The district’s search committee includes community members, staff members and student representatives. Following the committee interview, the candidates will be interviewed by the Board of Education. Before the new superintendent is named, board members plan to do a site visit to the candidate’s district.

Former Superintendent of Schools Phyllis Glassman retired earlier this month.
