OSSINING, N.Y. -- Westchester Community College’s Ossining Extension Center is calling all healthcare professionals with the introduction of a new course designed to jump start interested students in the growing field.

The Medical Administrative Assistant program offers hands-on training in the healthcare field, as students learn how to keep healthcare offices running efficiently and effectively. “Graduates of this program may find themselves in a variety of healthcare settings such as hospitals, long-term care settings, or nursing homes,” said Nicole Joseph, Director of the Ossining Extension Center at Westchester Community College.

The MAA Program is a one-semester course in which students learn the administrative responsibilities needed to perform this important job. The course teaches students about communicating with patients, electronic medical coding, filing insurance claims, maintaining records, as well as accounting and billing. Administrative medical assistants are responsible for a variety of tasks, from ensuring that medical records are accurate to helping facilities run smoothly. "MAAs are often the first to greet and help patients," said Joseph. "They help set the stage for a patient’s experience."

After successful completion of the course, students will have the opportunity to take the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) exam offered by the National Healthcareer Association for certification.

Other non-credit, health care certificate courses offered at the Ossining Extension Center include Clinical Medical Assistant, Pharmacy Tech, Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA), Phlebotomy, Mental Health Tech, ECG, Home Health Aid and RN Refresher.

Classes for the Medical Administrative Assistant program will begin in September. For more information and applications about this course and others offered at the Ossining Extension Center, visit their website.
