PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - Wellma the Wellness Wizard returned to Bedford Road School on Wednesday to teach kindergarten, first, and second-grade students about eating healthy.
Wellma was created and portrayed by third and fourth-grade science teacher Chrissie Moses as a way to put a face behind the school's longstanding wellness initiatives.
"I wanted to be able to have a person embody the whole idea of wellness that they could see and get to know," Moses said. "We have this whole thing, because it's so cute, the kids are like, 'You're Mrs. Moses.' So I always tell them that Wellma is my identical cousin, who lives in Wellness Wonderland."
While Wellma only makes the occasional appearance at Bedford Road School, she has become a mainstay throughout the year. Leading up to the assembly, Moses wrote a 30-page backstory for Wellma that the students were able read in class. Students are also participating in a poster contest using a drawing of Wellma, some of which will be hung throughout the school.
"The main thing is to teach the kids to make good food choices," Moses said. "With so much junk food around, it's very hard for them to know what's the best things to eat. So we always say choose from the five food groups, so that way you always know you're eating healthy."
Wellma will be making her return to Bedford Road School on Friday during the school's all-day Wellness Fair. Community members have volunteered to run six separate workshops for third and fourth-grade students.
In addition to nutrition, students will learn about dental health, basic first aid, proper cleansing and will take some yoga lessons.
"They spend the whole day and each class rotates around to six different workshops," Moses said. "The idea is to teach them about good food choices, to rest and to relax."
