The council recently introduced an ordinance to turn the committee into a commission in order to provide it more authority to plant, control, protect and improve the area's trees, said NorthJersey.com. Along with the change, will come stricter penalties for residents who hurt or cut down trees on public property, said NorthJersey.com.

If approved, the commission will consist of five residents, one of whom may be from the Public Work Shade Tree Division, and a non-voting member from the council, said NorthJersey.com. A public hearing will be held on the ordinance at the next council meeting, added NorthJersey.com.
