Wilton School Year Altered By Hurricane

WILTON, Conn. – It may be early September, but for the Wilton School System the calendar might as well say January.

After losing the first week of classes because of Hurricane Irene, the Board of Education started to tweak the Wilton Public School Calendar to deal with those "snow days."

"We are where we were in late January 2011," said Superintendent Gary Richards. "We've lost five days. The administration has been thinking about this for a while."

Richards recommended about a half dozen changes to the calendar at the school committee's meeting Thursday night.

As proposed, the last day of school for students will now be Wednesday, June 20, 2012. If there is one more snow day, the last day will move to June 21. A second additional snow day bumps the last day to Friday, June 22.

A third snow day will actually shorten the school year by one day. Although the final day will remain June 22, administrators will reduce the school year from 181 days to 180 days. Under state law, students must attend school a minimum of 180 days.

Richards told the board Wilton usually averages two to three snow days a year.

If, however, the upcoming winter plays out like this past one, Wilton students should be prepared to sacrifice some of their spring break.

A fourth snow day will cause Monday, April 16, the first day of what would be spring break, to now become a school day, said Richards. A fifth snow day means Tuesday, April 17, will also mean school for Wilton students.

"We don't know what is going to happen," said Board of Education Vice Chairman Dick Dubow. "Parents should know this is a possibility and realize part of April vacation may not be there."
