It didn't take long for New Hampshire voters, known for their independent thinking, to send a strong message in the 2016 presidential election by giving apparent victories in both parties to anti-establishment candidates Bernie Sanders (D) and Donald Trump (R) on Tuesday.

Sanders and Trump are projected winners of the nation's first primary by several major media outlets, with those projections made just as voting completed at 8 p.m.

"When we stand together, win win," Sanders said in a Tweet posted just after 8 p.m. "Thank you, New Hampshire."

Sanders, the longtime Vermont senator, is holding a nearly 20-percent lead over former first lady and secretary of state Hillary Clinton with nearly half of precincts reporting.

Trump, the real estate magnate and reality TV star who owns an estate in Bedford and golf clubs in Hopewell Junction and Briarcliff, is handily ahead by a 2-to-1 margin over Ohio Gov. John Kasich. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio are in a tight battle for the third spot.

Kasich will head into future primaries, including the next two scheduled -- South Carolina and Nevada -- with a huge bounce after possibly catapulting to second place after a distant finish in the Iowa cause.

Though Clinton supporters point out it is a 50-state campaign and she is ahead in most states' polls, there have been reports of a possible shakeup of Clinton's campaign staff. Also of concern for the Clinton camp is the fact that Sanders overwhelmingly won support of both young and independent voters.
