PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Pleasantville Mayor Peter Scherer joined the Mayors Against Illegal Guns group in an effort to demand action for tougher gun laws at the federal and state level, he announced this week.
"I've been receiving quite a bit of material on the subject," Scherer said earlier this week at the Pleasantville Board of Trustees meeting. "It's seeking to draw attention to what I think, and what most of the cosigners think, it’s common sense kind of steps."
The group was started by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino in a nationwide effort to stop individuals from illegally obtaining guns.
Scherer also attended a day of advocacy held by the group in Washington D.C. on Wednesday. Scherer said the purpose of the event was for local mayors to review current gun legislation with members of Congress and to discuss any plans for future legislation or action.
Scherer was not immediately available for comment Thursday to discuss the trip to Washington. Scherer stated earlier in the week that despite joining the group, he is still in support of owning guns legally.
"It's not an attack on the second amendment," Scherer said. "It's simply an attempt to gain control over the flow of illegal guns that endanger all of us and certainly as we've seen in incidents around the country, endanger our children as well."
