PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Parking on Romer Avenue just outside the library entrance will no longer be an option during school dismissal hours, as the Pleasantville Board of Trustees passed a local law Monday to restrict parking near the middle school and high school.
Parking will be banned from 7 to 9 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. for about 60 feet north of the Mount Pleasant Public Library entrance going toward the Pleasantville Middle School driveway. The restriction is in effect only during the months when school is in session. Currently a handful of cars are able to park on that stretch of Romer Avenue. Village board members said the area was of concern because of the sight obstruction that parked cars cause for drivers leaving the library parking lot while students are walking to and from school.
Trustee Colleen Griffin Wagner said at a previous meeting that pulling out of the lot during dismissal time is a daunting task.
“You can’t make a right out of the parking lot when cars are parked there,” Griffin Wagner said. “It’s impossible.”
The new parking restriction is not the only change coming to Romer Avenue for this school year. In January, the village announced that a speed bump would be put in place to slow down drivers.
During the school year, Romer Avenue becomes increasingly popular, as the Pleasantville school district does not have public transportation, and students either walk or get rides in cars.
Pleasantville schools are scheduled to open Wednesday, Sept. 5. Representatives of the village were unavailable to comment Tuesday on whether signs for the new parking restriction would be installed in time.
