PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - A Pleasantville group has started an online petition to get the Village of Pleasantville Board of Trustees to ban the distribution of plastic bags.
The petition , on Change.org, calls for Pleasantville to "end free distribution of disposable plastic bags by Pleasantville retailers."
The petition has more than 60 "signatures" of Pleasantville residents. It cites recent plastic bag legislation in Rye and Mamaroneck.
"Plastic bags are discarded into the environment, travel through waterways into the oceans and endanger the lives of marine species including seabirds, turtles, seals, sea lions, whales, and fish," the petition says. "Also, the manufacturing of plastic bags uses non-renewable fossil fuels and creates a product that does not biodegrade. Finally, plastic bags create unsightly litter and clog storm drains."
