To the Editor:

Protecting young immigrants from deportation has wide bi-partisan support and most Americans support the Dream Act.

When Trump ended DACA in September he said he supported Congress passing a Dream Act to protect DACA recipients. Now he is using the 800,000 DACA recipients as bargaining chips in order to get more funding for building his wall, militarizing the border, and detaining and deporting more immigrants. Essentially, he’s saying to Dreamers, we will pass a bill that stops your deportation, but we’re going to deport your mother, your father, your grandmother... You can stay, but we will destroy your family and your community.

What we need is a clean Dream Act – a bill that solely addresses the status of immigrants who came here as minors. A number of Senators, including Senator Gillibrand, have committed to voting against any spending bill on December 22nd if a clean Dream Act isn’t passed. Senator Schumer has not made this commitment, and he has made it clear he is willing to negotiate with Trump on including anti-immigrant measures in the 2017 Dream Act.

Every day 122 people lose DACA protection. If we do not get a clean Dream Act before or as a part of the December 22 spending bill, more dreamers will become at risk of deportation and the political possibility of passing a clean Dream Act vanishes.

We urge you to join us in our demand that Senator Schumer commit to a clean DREAM Act. Please call Senator Schumer – (914) 734-1532.

Sincerely, Mary Cronin
