The police academy is a six-week internship designed for high school seniors interested in law enforcement. Police officers throughout the county help run the program, which began nine years ago at Byram Hills High School.

"You truly, truly earned this moment," Croton Police Detective Cliff Gabrielsen told graduates during Thursday's ceremony.

Graduates worked on their athleticism, learned about criminal justice and went on numerous field trips to learn how law enforcement officials spend their time.

For the first time, Pace University offered students three class credits of criminal justice for the program. Gabrielsen said 11 students had taken advantage of the opportunity.

Sen. Greg Ball (R-Patterson) congratulated students for their hard work, joking he'd challenge them to a push-up contest but he knew they'd win.

"You have many great days ahead of you," he said.
