The crash in Southeast, which was near the border with the village of Brewster, occurred around 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Two of the victims were children, according to the Sheriff's Department.

The Sheriff's Department says the crash happened when a Toyota sedan that was going eastbound on Route 6 tried to turn onto Route 22 and go northbound. The vehicle was then "struck broadside by a Toyota minivan heading westbound on Route 6," according to the report.

The sedan's occupants, according to the Sheriff's Department, included a male driver, female passengers in the front passenger seat and a rear seat and a 4-year-old boy in the other rear seat.

The minivan's occupants, according to the report, were a female driver, a female passenger in a rear seat and an infant, two-and a half months, in the other rear seat. The Sheriff's Department adds that the infant was ejected from her child-safety seat but not from the vehicle itself.

The woman who was the sedan's front-seat passenger, according to the Sheriff's Department, "was reported to be critically injured in the crash" and was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. Ambulances transported the other six people to Danbury Hospital, the Sheriff's Department says, adding they have injuries not believed to be life threatening.

The location was near Starr Ridge Road and an interchange with Interstate 684. Eastbound traffic on Route 6 was allowed Wednesday afternoon while westbound traffic was not. At the same time, northbound traffic to Route 22 from the intersection was permitted while southbound traffic from there onto Route 6 was not. Traffic. All closed lanes reopened at 4:55 p.m., the New York State Department of Transportation reported.

Assistance was provided by State Police, the Brewster and Carmel Ambulance Corps, the Brewster Fire Department, paramedics from Putnam and Danbury, a LifeNet helicopter and the Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services, according to the Sheriff's Department.

The crash is the second serious one in Southeast in less than a week. Daily Voice previously reported that two people were killed on Friday, Nov. 14 in a head-on collision of two vehicles on Route 22.
