State police confirmed that they are investigating a hit-and-run incident that seriously injured a 20-year-old Patterson pedestrian about 8:45 p.m. on Friday night.

Aaron "A.J." Hicks, a spokesman for Troop K of the New York State Police, said, "We do have an open investigation that is ongoing. No new details at this time."

Daily Voice originally learned about the hit-skip accident from the pedestrian's mother, Migdalia Torres-Romero of Patterson, in an article reported here on Sunday.

Torres-Romero contacted Daily Voice to seek the public's help in identifying the driver of a large, dark pickup truck that she said struck her daughter along the side of Haviland Hollow Road, about 100 feet from Route 22.

"I am a mom being the FBI," Torres-Romero told Daily Voice.

"Now she's depressed and missing work," Torres-Romero said Tuesday of her daughter, Nefretiri Chappotin, also known to co-workers as "Dede."

Torres-Romero said a piece of metal was placed in her daughter's right hand to fix it, but that doctors told them that Dede will need more surgeries.

Torres-Romero said that her daughter was walking on the shoulder of Haviland Hollow while a friend was walking along the opposite shoulder of the roadway.

A pickup truck with its high beam lights on reportedly sped up as it approached Route 22. Nefretiri Chappotin tried to jump further away from the passenger side of the truck as it sped up, but it still struck her right hand.

On Tuesday, Torres-Romero also asked the unidentified customer at Patterson Deli -- who they consider "an angel" -- to contact the family. The woman, who Torres-Romero thinks may have been a nurse, administered first aid while they waited for EMTs and state police to arrive.

Torres-Romero said state police are checking truck parts found at the accident scene against a national database for more clues.

Her daughter was taken by ambulance to Danbury Hospital for surgery. "Dede" Chappotin, who works in the kitchen at Pleasant Ridge Nursing Home, said she hopes to be an Emergency Medical Technician someday.
