PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. ‒ Beer cans and cigarette butts found at All Souls Cemetery may help Pleasantville Police find the vandals responsible for knocking over and damaging 29 headstones last week.
The department will run DNA and fingerprint tests on eight 24-ounce Rolling Rock cans, two 24-ounce Miller High Life cans, cigarette butts and an empty Lucky Strike cigarette carton found at the scene, police said.
Police Chief Richard Love said in a statement that the “heinous crime" caused more than $15,000 worth of damage.
An initial investigation has led police to believe that a "small group of youths" entered the cemetery from the railroad tracks. They proceeded to drink alcohol, smoke and eventually damage the headstones, police said.
Earlier this week, Holy Innocents Parish offered a $1,000 reward for any tip leading to an "arrest and conviction” in the felony criminal mischief case.
Tips can be reported to the Pleasantville Police in person at 80 Wheeler Ave. or at 914-769-1500.
