Sullivan’s career at Stepinac began in 1949 — a year after the all boys’ Catholic high school opened — when he joined as assistant coach to Buzz Werder for the fledgling football team. He served in that capacity until 1958 when he assumed responsibilities as head coach.
Among the notable Stepinac alumni he coached during his 23-year tenure at the helm of the Crusaders was former NFL lineman Bob Hyland of White Plains. In 2008, Sullivan was inducted into Stepinac’s Hall of Fame.
