Pleasantville Professor Donald Ryan Dies at 75

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Donald James Ryan, a longtime White Plains resident, died June 23. He was 75. 

Ryan was a former president of the White Plains Board of Education. 

He was born July 3, 1936 in New York City to Raymond E. and Cecelia Cummins Ryan. On Aug. 17, 1963, Ryan married Gail McVey in Jackson Heights, N.Y.  He was a professor of literature and communications at Pace University in Pleasantville for more than 40 years. An avid photographer, he was also a New York Mets fan. 

Ryan is survived by his wife, Gail Ryan, of White Plains; two sons, Paul (Brenda) Ryan of Thornwood and John (Barbara) Ryan, of Naperville, Ill.; a daughter, Elizabeth (Dennis McGettigan) Ryan of New York City and eight grandchildren. 

Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at McMahon, Lyon and Hartnett Funeral Home in White Plains. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in White Plains, with the Rev. John Quinn officiating. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Tribute Program, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148.
