Angelo Nonna, 93, Of Pleasantville

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Angelo Nonna, of Pleasantville, died on Tuesday, Aug. 4. He was 93.

Nonna was born in Civitavecchia, Italy, on Feb. 28, 1922, growing up in Viterbo, Italy.

He attended art school, joined the Italian Navy in 1939 and served during World War II until Italy's surrender to the Allies in 1943.

Nonna was able to escape the Germans on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples, where the Americans had landed. He would serve in the U.S. Navy with other Italian sailors until the end of the war, surviving the sinking of three ship and meeting his wife, Josephine along the way.

After settling in the Bronx, he worked as a wood finisher on projects at the Metropolitan Opera, Metropolitan Museum and department stores and offices in New York City. He moved to Pleasantville in 1989.

His life was the subject of the award-winning 2005 documentary “A Beautiful Destiny.”

Nonna was predeceased by his wife, and is survived by son, John and his wife Jean; four grandchildren, Liz Cunliffe and her husband James, Caroline Holland and her husband Paul, Marianne and Tim and two great-grandchildren, Amelia and Elliot Holland.

Visiting hours are Wednesday at Beecher Flooks Funeral Home in Pleasantville from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Innocents Roma.Catholic Church on Thursday at 10 a.m.

Interment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.
