Pleasantville Moves Forward With Tree Program

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Pleasantville’s Board of Trustees is ready to approve an initiative that would offer a variety of discounted trees to residents as part of a continuing effort to beautify the village.

The 50/50 Tree Program is a joint initiative taken by the board of trustees and the Conservation Advisory Committee. The village plans to appropriate about $3,500 in its 2012-13 budget to purchase a variety of trees that residents can then purchase for half the cost to plant on their private property.

Mayor Peter Scherer acknowledged that questions always arise when public funds are spent on projects for private property, but said residents purchasing the trees must plant them to be visible from public view.

“Clearly we’re doing it for public purpose,” Scherer said. Once purchased and installed by the town, watering and maintaining the trees becomes the responsibility of the resident.

A representative from the Conservation Advisory Committee said the trees will be available for purchase between $150-$175. Types of trees include: redwoods, dogwoods, sycamores, elm trees and maple trees. The trees will stand around six and seven feet tall.

“It’s not gonna be one of those Trees for Tribs things that looks like a stick sticking out of the ground,” said Trustee Mindy Berard. “They’re mature height.”

While nothing is set in stone, village officials seemed excited about including the initiative into the budget, which will be approved some time before May 1.

“I’m happy with it. Let’s do it. Let’s roll,” Scherer said.
