Pleasantville Middle School Students Showcase Art

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The artwork of Pleasantville Middle School students was on display for the village community to see Wednesday evening at the Winter Art Show exhibit put together in the school’s art department wing.

“I’m very proud of the students,” said middle school art teacher Carolyn Moss, who coordinated the event. “They put a lot of effort into their work over the last few months and they deserve this.”

The students’ work was hung on the hallway walls and in the classrooms of the art wing. Each student in grades five through eight took an art class this quarter and was required to choose one or more pieces of art to display in the show. The work varied from cartoon paintings to charcoal drawings and sculptures.

Jacqui Johnson of Pleasantville attended the show to view the work of her daughter, Kaylee. It was her first trip to an art show at the school and Johnson called it a pleasant experience.

“It’s very welcoming to come and view the various art of students in our community,” Johnson said. “And obviously the kids are very excited to see their work on display.”

Johnson added that the show could be crucial for the students’ confidence.

“I think with this age group of middle school students it’s important to showcase their work in order to boost their self-esteem,” Johnson said.

Moss said Wednesday’s show was the second of four that will take place throughout the school year. In year’s past, the school put together a single art show at the end of the year. Moss said breaking it down into four shows was beneficial for parents and students.

“I realized over the years that when we did one big show it was far too crowded and the parents and children were not able to view all the different art on display,” Moss said. “This way it’s more personal and everyone’s free to look around.”

Moss said that by the end of the year, every middle school student will have their art displayed at a show.
