Pleasantville Grad Dies In Climbing Accident

ASPEN, Colo. - The body of Pleasantville High School graduate and FDNY paramedic Lenny Joyner was found Tuesday morning after he was reported missing following a mountain-climbing accident.

Joyner, 31, arrived in Colorado last week to climb the Maroon Bells mountains near Aspen. Joyner updated his Google+ account from the Denver International Airport on July 16.

"Who flies all the way to Colorado just to climb a mountain?" Joyner wrote. "This guy! Sure as hell hope HIP covers any rock vs skull issues."

On July 19, he updated his trip with "Made it! Now for part 2!" The mobile updates contained coordinates to indicate he had reached the summit of 14,156-foot South Maroon Peak.

According to the New York Post , friends and family became concerned Sunday when Joyner, a six-year department veteran, missed a scheduled shift at EMS 7 in Chelsea and he stopped returning his parents’ text messages. An alert was put out after he was declared missing.

"Lenny went mountain climbing in Colorado and has not been heard from since Thursday after posting on Facebook about getting to the top of the mountain," read the alert.

According to the Post , Joyner's body was recovered by a helicopter rescue crew at 11,100 feet on North Maroon Peak near Aspen, about 3,000 feet below the summit.

Before moving to New York City, Joyner was a volunteer in the Pleasantville Fire Department. He graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh in 2004 with a degree in biochemistry.
