PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. For Father William Holt at the Holy Innocents Parish in Pleasantville, this Christmas will be his first as pastor of the parish. Yet the meaning of Christmas to him is all the same.
Christmas is a time of year when its important to go out of your way to do things for others, Holt said.
Holt was made pastor in November after previously serving at Old Lady of Pompeii, also in Pleasantville. He said in his short time at the parish, he has already grown to enjoy the members. During this holiday season, he and his members followed Holts meaning of Christmas and gathered toys and food items to be distributed to less fortunate families located in New York City.
Ive found already that the people here are very warm, theyre super generous, Holt said.
Holt said that in his experiences as a pastor more people come out during the Christmas services than at any other point throughout the year and that he expects the same at his new church. However, he believes that all should be welcomed.
Its always very special to see the large crowds during Christmas time, Holt said. Jesus welcomes all back.
Steve Phillips, pastor at the United Methodist Church in Pleasantville, said Christmas is a time to reflect on the past and dwell on the future.
Its a time of year that links us to tradition and brings us back to all sorts of memories from when we were children and that in turn links us to our future, Phillips.
Phillips also echoed Holts beliefs that Christmas is a time of year where it is important to give back, especially to those in need.
The church and I believe in Jesus belief that the path to ultimate fullness is ultimately the emptying of ones self, Phillips said. And thats what Christmas is all about.
