Pleasantville Cleans Up Storm Damage

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Pleasantville resident Mike Matra was not home Sunday during the wicked storms and was shocked at what he saw when he pulled up to his house. A large tree in Matra's front yard had fallen onto his home.

"After a few phone calls from people I came home and saw it and it was a lot bigger than I initially expected," Matra said.

Matra's home on 375 Bedford Road had substantial damage to its roof and siding, along with a few broken windows from the crushing blow by the tree. Matra's lived at this residence for the past eight years and says that in all of his time living there, he has never experienced a storm as bad as the one on Sunday.

Multiple branches were knocked down all along Bedford Road, yet none had a major impact on any homes or buildings.

Mount Pleasant Supervisor Joan Maybury said residents along Mountain Road in Pleasantville also reported damage to their homes, with three trees being knocked down onto homes. However, she said the overall damage to the town was not that significant as in years past, such as in 2006 when a tornado came through Stevens Avenue in Hawthorne.

"I know that there were significant winds but what happened in the Mount Pleasant area itself is not as serious as we have seen in the past," Maybury said.

As of 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Consolidated Edison reported that most power had been restored in the Pleasantville and Mount Pleasant area, with only five customers reporting outages.

For Matra, Hawthorne Brothers Tree Service Inc. was there most of the morning and early afternoon on Monday removing the fallen tree and said he hopes to be in contact with his insurance company in order to have his home restored quickly.
