Pleasantville Charitable Giving Lower Than Others

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Pleasantville's charitable giving is lower than the state and county median, but the town still ranks in the 84th percentile in the country, with a total of $12.7 million given to charity in the most recent year tracked, according to The Chronicle of Philanthropy.

The Chronicle ranked Pleasantville 1,828th out of 28,725 ZIP codes in the United States. The median contribution Pleasantville residents gave was $3,395, or 3 percent of their income.

The Westchester median percent of income given to charity is 4.6 percent, while the New York and national medians are 4.7 percent of income.

Westchester County as a whole is one of the more generous in the country, giving a total of $1.2 billion in donations, good enough for a No. 12 spot amid the 3,115 counties tracked nationwide, in terms of total contributions.

The data also show that Americans with lower incomes gave a bigger share of their earnings to charity. The same holds true for Pleasantville residents, where taxpayers with an income lower than $99,999 gave 10.4 percent of their income, while those who made more between $100,000 and $199,999 gave 3.5 percent of their income.

In terms of percentage of income given, New York ranks 17th in the nation, with a residents donating a median 4.7 percent of their disposable income to charities or nonprofits. The national median is about the same percentage. In comparison, Utah ranked No. 1, with residents giving 10.6 percent of their disposable income. But if religious contributions are subtracted, New York rises to second in the nation.

The Chronicle's data was collected from American taxpayers' claims to charitable deductions released by the IRS in 2008, and only included taxpayers with incomes greater than $50,000 because of discrepancies in the data of those with lower incomes.
